                       KUCHIPUDI DANCE



The kuchipudi was originated from the place named 'KUCHIPUDI' in krishna districtof ANDHRA PRADESH, around 3rd century bce, it has a very lon tradition of dance-drama.

It was popular under the generic name of YAKSHAGANA. it's origin BHAGAVATHULU dance in temple.

CULTURE OF DANCE-  kuchipudi dance has a speciality called- 'TARANGAM' in which the dancer 
                                          performs on the top of the brass plates. And sometimes balances some pot on 
                                          the head. This makes the dance form extremely unique.


Kuchipudi gradually developed ad a solo dance form and today we can see both male and female performing it. Both lasya and tandav predominates. 

The solo items are- 'Balgopala taranga'- (dance on the edged of brass plate with a pitcher full of water on head) , Manduka shabdam ( story of frog maiden), and Tala chitra nritya (drawing picture with dancing toes).

THEMES- kuchipudi are themes related to vaishnavism, lord krishna, rukmini, satyabhama and other myths. kuchipudi dance form also holds certain specialities of bharatnatyam and odissi as well.


CLOTHING/ COSTUMES AND MAKEUP- kuchipudi dress has only one frill/fan legthier than the lengthiest fan in the former. kuchipudi separate pallu is stitched seen on the left side. two buns are used in kuchipudi.

The makeup is similar to that of bharatnatyam.
A dancer in a female role would wear a sari with light makeup. today stitched costume is available.

The traditional kuchipudi was performed by all male and their attire was quite simple 'AGNIVASTRA' also known as BAGALBANDI and a DHOTI. Today performance is in groups and as solo items.





MUSIC AND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS- Carnatic music used in this dance and the language is                                                                                   usually telugu.

       Instruments are mridangam, cymbals, veena, flute and tambura.                                                      
 

PATRONAGE- Tirtha narayana yati and his disciple siddhendra yogi orgnized and founded the modern                            version of kuchipudi. 
 
                         Vedantam lakshminarayana shastri (1886-1956) was the prominent figure who led                                     various efferts to revive, protect and reconstruct classical kuchipudi dance form.
